A NEW EMISSARY TO PROTECT THE PUNAAUIA LAGOON: THE FINAL STAGES IN PICTURES

20 January 2026 CSR Projects

In Punaauia, Geocean is supporting the upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant by constructing a new 1.4 km HDPE submarine outfall, designed to discharge treated effluent further offshore and better protect the lagoon and Tahiti’s shoreline.

Three key offshore phases

In this new video capsule, we take you through the final three phases of the offshore works:

  • the careful preparation of the landfall area, at the interface between land and sea,
  • the controlled towing and laydown of the pipeline strings,
  • installation of permanent anchors on the seabed.

A project engineered for the lagoon

Throughout these operations, Geocean’s teams have worked towards a dual objective: delivering a high-performance piece of infrastructure and tightly controlling its environmental footprint. Enhanced marine marking, weather-dependent work windows, optimised dredging, silt curtains, controlled anchoring and shoreline reinstatement all contribute to one goal: securing the discharge of treated water while preserving lagoon water quality.

This video provides a concrete illustration of how a complex marine construction project can be delivered with high standards in safety, risk management and protection of the marine environment.

A project led by SEM Vaitama and funded by the French Polynesian government, with support from the European Union as part of the implementation of its water policy.
