Papeete : Installation of a deepwater SWAC for the Tahiti Hospital Center
This innovative urban project involved installing the world’s largest and most powerful seawater air-conditioning system at Tahiti’s public hospital, with 6 MW of cooling capacity and 4.3 km of piping. French Polynesia is 94% dependent on carbon-based energy.

Since its commissioning in July 2022, the SWAC has reduced electricity consumption by 8.7 GWH per year, i.e. 35% of the hospital’s consumption and 2% of the island’s total consumption. This has led to a reduction of 5,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Despite the challenges of busy urban and maritime environments, including ports, fishermen and yachters, our team implemented strategic landing solutions to minimise environmental disruption.
The project is an example of seamless coordination between all the stakeholders involved.
Engineering, procurement, construction and installation of a seawater air-conditioning system:
- Offshore survey.
- 1 PEHD PE100 DN710 pipe, excavated and stabilised along its route, approximately 4,000 m long to a water depth of 900 m.
- 1 HDPE 100 DN710 outlet pipe, approx. 200 m long, excavated and stabilised along its route, fitted with a diffuser.
- Subsea and tie-in work in water depths of up to 60 m.
- Performance tests and final inspections.
